Why the cluster matters
China does not make cable in one place. Copper rod, compound, fillers, drums and test labs gather around a handful of towns, and each town has drifted towards particular constructions. A plant in a power cable town will usually run XLPE lines, armouring machines and drum yards; a plant in an optics town will run fibre colouring, secondary coating and loose tube lines. Asking a data cable plant for medium voltage cable, or a power cable plant for ADSS, tends to end in outsourcing you cannot see. The desk therefore starts every shortlist with the cluster, then narrows it to partner plants whose lines, test records and certificates match your construction. The figures below are only those we can attribute; they describe the regions, not any single plant.
Cluster map
| Cluster | Typical constructions | Attributed figure (source, year) |
|---|---|---|
| Yixing, Jiangsu, including Guanlin town | LV and MV power cable, special cable, full range | Yixing wire and cable output passed 100 billion yuan at the end of 2020 (Jiangsu provincial news site, 2021); Guanlin cable output of more than 120 billion yuan a year and over 10% of the domestic market (Xinhua Daily Media, 2025) |
| Ningjin, Hebei | Low and medium voltage cable, new energy cable | 2,393 cluster enterprises and revenue of 68.89 billion yuan in 2024, up 28.9% (Hebei Department of Industry and Information Technology, 2025); listed as a 2024 national SME characteristic industrial cluster |
| Wuwei, Anhui, including Gaogou town | Special cable, for example control, instrumentation and fire-resistant types | Output of above-scale wire and cable enterprises of more than 30 billion yuan in 2022, with over 270 cable and supporting enterprises (China Daily website, 2023); listed as a 2023 national SME characteristic industrial cluster |
| Wuhan Optics Valley, Hubei | Preform, optical fibre, optical cable | More than 25% of the international fibre and cable market and the largest domestic fibre and cable base (Wuhan municipal government, 2021/2022) |
| Qidu, Wujiang, Jiangsu | Optical cable and power cable | A national Torch Program optical and electric cable industry base |
| Humen, Dongguan, Guangdong | Information transmission cable: LAN, consumer electronics, cords | About 200 above-scale enterprises with output of about 22 billion yuan a year (21st Century Business Herald, 2022) |
| Southwest China, Yunnan | Building wire and power cable for Southeast Asia | Partner plants with TIS 11 model experience; no regional figure quoted |
Power and special cable: Yixing, Ningjin, Wuwei
For LV XLPE power cable, armoured cable and medium voltage work, the desk looks first at Yixing and Guanlin, then Ningjin, whose cluster is described as low and medium voltage and new energy cable. Wuwei and Gaogou are known for special cable: control, instrumentation, fire-resistant and project-specific constructions. Within each town plants differ widely, from listed groups with type-tested MV ranges to small workshops buying in insulated cores. Cluster reputation narrows the search; it does not replace the audit.
Fibre, data and regional plants
Optical fibre and cable sourcing runs through Wuhan Optics Valley and Qidu, where preform, fibre drawing, colouring, loose tube and sheathing lines sit close together. Humen in Dongguan is the reference for LAN cable, patch leads and cords; we do not use it for power cable. For Thai projects that need TIS 11 building wire, the desk works with southwest partner plants that already hold TIS experience for the model concerned, checked per order.
Trade signals behind the map
- China exported 2.77 million tonnes of wire and cable worth USD 26.3 billion in 2024, up 19.2% and 13.7% (Huajing Industry Research, customs data, 2025).
- HS 8544 exports were about USD 28 billion in 2023; the top three markets were the United States 13.5%, Japan 7.09% and Korea 6.99% (TrendEconomy / UN Comtrade). These include wiring harnesses, so much of that share is electronics and automotive harness rather than building cable (inference).
- Optical cable under HS 8544.70 reached USD 2.34 billion in 2023, 25% of world exports, and optical fibre under HS 9001.10 reached USD 689.5 million, 25.6% (TrendEconomy / UN Comtrade).
- In 2024 China exported 379,100 tonnes of optical cable worth 16.83 billion yuan and 27,300 tonnes of optical fibre, up 24.76% (General Administration of Customs via C114, 2025).
- Domestic optical cable output fell from 323 million fibre-km in 2023 to 269 million fibre-km in 2024, down 18.2% (National Bureau of Statistics), which helps explain the export push.
Copper and aluminium make up roughly 80% of product cost (listed company filings), so quotes follow copper plus a processing fee wherever the cable is made; see copper price and cable quotes.
How the desk uses the map
- Your construction, standard and market set the cluster: power, special, fibre or data.
- The desk shortlists two or three partner plants there and runs the factory audit.
- Certificates and test records are checked against the exact construction, not the plant's brochure.
- Production, testing and drum plans are confirmed in writing; send the BOQ through the quote form.
